In July 1633, during King Charles I’s lavish coronation tour, a wooden ferry known as the Blessing of Burntisland was completely swallowed by a sudden, violent storm in the Firth of Forth. Out of the 35 people on board, only two survived the freezing, dark waters. But the true tragedy for the Crown was what sank to the bottom with them: a staggering cargo valued at £100,000 in the 17th century, which translates to hundreds of millions today. For decades, this massive hoard—including a legendary gold and silver dinner service commissioned by Henry VIII—was thought to be lost to the crushing depths forever.
But now, after a grueling 30-year obsessive hunt, the volunteer team at Burntisland Heritage finally cracked the case.
