Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
– a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
– an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
– a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
– a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver’s door.
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.
ADULT OCCUPANT
CommentsThe passenger compartment of the Taycan remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of theknees and femurs of the driver and passenger. Porsche showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants ofdifferent sizes and to those sitting in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of all critical body areas was good oradequate for both occupants, with the exception of the rear passenger’s chest, for which dummy readings of compression indicated amarginal level of protection. In the side barrier impact, protection of all critical body areas was good and the car scored full points in thistests. In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest was adequate and that of other body areas was good. Tests on the frontseats and head restraints demonstrated marginal protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometricassessment of the rear seats also indicated marginal whiplash protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systemperformed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds at which many whiplash injuries occur. However, the Taycan was not awardedthe points for these tests as good dynamic performance in the front seats is a prerequisite for AEB scoring.
CHILD OCCUPANT
CommentsIn the frontal offset test, protection of all critical body areas was good for both dummies except the neck of the 6 year dummy, protection ofwhich was rated as marginal on the basis of tensile forces measured in the dummy. In the side barrier test, protection of all critical bodyareas was good and the Taycan scored maximum points in this part of the assessment. The front passenger airbag can be disabled toallow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status ofthe airbag and the system was rewarded. One universal child restraint could not be positioned stably in the rear centre seat. Otherwise, allof the restraint types for which the Taycan is designed could be properly installed and accommodated in the car.
VULNERABLE ROAD USERS
CommentsThe Taycan has an active, deployable bonnet. Sensors in the bumper detect when a pedestrian has been struck and actuators lift thebonnet surface to provide greater clearance to the stiff structures in the engine compartment. Porsche showed that the system workedrobustly for different pedestrian statures and across a wide range of speeds, so tests were performed with the bonnet in the raisedposition. Protection was good or adequate at almost all test locations on the bonnet. The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians’legs and protection of the pelvis was also good. The Taycan’s AEB system can detect vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists,as well as other vehicles. In tests, the system’s response to cyclists was good, with collisions avoided or mitigated in most cases, and itsresponse to pedestrians was adequate.
SAFETY ASSIST
CommentsThe Taycan has a seatbelt reminder system for the front and rear seats. The AEB system performed adequately in tests of its response toother vehicles at highway speeds. A lane support system helps prevent inadvertent drifting out of lane. A speed assistance system uses acamera and digital mapping to determine the local limit, and presents this information to the driver who can allow the system to adapt thelimiter as appropriate.
