2027 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: First-Class Luxury on Wheels

Highs and Lows
Strengths include a whisper-quiet cabin, exquisite interior materials, and an available V-12 engine. Drawbacks include styling that may look too much like a regular Mercedes to some buyers, atrocious V-12 fuel economy, and a digital dashboard that doesn’t match the otherwise tasteful interior.

Verdict
The Maybach S-Class starts with Benz-level appointments and takes them into ultra-luxury territory, while still undercutting Bentley and Rolls-Royce on price.

Overview
The Maybach S-Class offers a Lufthansa first-class experience for the road, a more elevated version of the already decadent S-Class sedan. A long list of standard features and an interior swathed in elegant finery mean there is no bad seat. Power comes from either a 530-hp twin-turbo V-8 or a 621-hp twin-turbo V-12, sent to the road through all-wheel drive. The stretched body opens up extensive rear-seat room, ideal for being chauffeured, especially with the optional reclining, massaging rear seats. It is a worthy rival to the Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls-Royce Ghost, though those carry more brand cachet and stage presence.

What’s New for 2027
The Maybach gets a facelift, including a grille about 20 percent larger than last year’s, fully illuminated and topped with the Maybach name. The headlights now contain lighting elements shaped like the Mercedes three-pointed star. Inside, the front cabin gets the MBUX Superscreen spanning the entire dashboard, while rear passengers get new 13.1-inch headrest displays and a redesigned center console with special holders for optional silver-plated Robbe and Berking champagne flutes. Under the hood, the standard 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 now makes 530 hp, up from 496.

Pricing
The 2027 Maybach S-Class starts at $211,750 and goes up to $249,000 depending on trim and options.

Engine and Performance
The S580 uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 making 530 hp, while the S680 swaps in a 621-hp twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 that sounds as though its internal parts are slathered in butter. Both use a 9-speed automatic and 4Matic all-wheel drive. The most impressive qualities are not the power but the supremely supple ride and nearly silent cabin, helped by standard air suspension and active sound cancellation. Rear-wheel steering helps with tight city streets.

Acceleration
Car and Driver recorded 3.7 seconds to 60 mph for the S680. Based on manufacturer estimates, the 771-hp hybrid Bentley Flying Spur might beat it by a couple of tenths.

Fuel Economy
The S580 is estimated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The S680 is estimated at 12 city, 20 highway, and 14 combined. Real-world highway testing is still to come.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
So many features are standard that they can’t all be listed, including exquisite leather on virtually every surface, a 64-color ambient lighting system, heated and ventilated massaging front seats with four memory settings, heated, power-adjustable massaging rear seats, an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance, and a panoramic sunroof. The rear center armrest holds storage, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and temperature-controlled cupholders. Folding tables, window shades, and new 13.1-inch displays with integrated cameras for video conferences are also included, and a four-seat executive cabin with a reclining right rear seat and ottoman is available. Trunk space is nearly identical to the standard S-Class, which swallowed six carry-on suitcases in testing.

Infotainment and Connectivity
The dash-spanning Superscreen combines a 12.3-inch passenger screen, a 14.4-inch central screen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, though it doesn’t match the otherwise tasteful interior. The fourth-generation MBUX system offers dual wireless phone chargers up front and 100-watt USB-C ports, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 30-speaker Burmester system is standard, with a 39-speaker version optional.

Safety and Driver Assistance
Standard features include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering.
