2027 Mitsubishi Pajero First Look: Hello, Montero

The new Mitsubishi Pajero, previously known as the Montero in the United States, returns as the fifth generation of the SUV. It will be available in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Mitsubishi says no decision has been made about a U.S. introduction.

Design and Construction

The Pajero retains its traditional body-on-frame construction, with three rows, seven seats, and a rear-wheel-drive-based powertrain. It is roughly as long as a Toyota 4Runner, about as wide as a Ford Bronco, and nearly as tall as a Land Cruiser. Its suspension combines double wishbones at the front with a live rear axle and a new five-link coil-spring setup.

Engine and Four-Wheel Drive

A 2.4-liter variable-geometry turbodiesel produces 354 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Horsepower has not been announced.

The S-AWC system includes a two-speed transfer case, a locking center differential, and selectable two- and four-wheel-drive settings. Multiple driving modes accommodate surfaces such as gravel, sand, and snow.

Off-Road Capability

The Pajero offers 9.1 inches of ground clearance, with approach, breakover, and departure angles of 30.4, 22.6, and 25.8 degrees. These figures suggest good capability but fall short of more off-road-focused versions of the 4Runner, Bronco, and Land Cruiser. Mitsubishi emphasizes a balance between off-road performance and on-road comfort and handling.

Interior and Equipment

The cabin features brown-and-black upholstery, padded leather surfaces, quilted seats, and a large screen setup with separate volume and climate controls below. Equipment includes a comprehensive range of safety and driver-assistance systems, a bird’s-eye parking camera, and a Yamaha sound system.

Prospects for a U.S. Return

The article remains skeptical about a U.S. launch. The Pajero is based on the L200/Triton pickup platform, which has not been certified for U.S. sale. Meeting American safety requirements could be expensive, while the diesel engine presents potential emissions and market-acceptance challenges.

Mitsubishi’s existing U.S. powertrains offer no straightforward alternative. Adapting the Outlander PHEV system or installing a Nissan engine would require substantial engineering and certification work. The article suggests that a restyled Nissan Armada carrying the Montero badge could make more financial sense.
