Overview
Zeekr, a Chinese luxury brand founded only a few years ago, is expanding rapidly in Australia with three models already on sale and three more coming, including the large plug-in hybrid 8X SUV. The 8X was tested on ice at a New Zealand facility ahead of its expected Australian launch next year, with pricing likely starting around $80,000. Testing was limited to ice driving in Chinese-spec, left-hand-drive vehicles, so real-world performance may differ once local models arrive.
Powertrain and Performance
In China, the 8X offers four variants with two or three electric motors and either a 55kWh or 70kWh battery on a 900-volt platform, though Australian models will likely use an 800-volt setup. Zeekr claims up to 257km of pure electric range and 1,152km combined with petrol, under WLTP testing. The dual-motor version produces 660kW for a 3.7-second 0-100km/h time, while the tri-motor version reaches 1030kW and 3.0 seconds. The Australian-spec vehicle is expected to use a 660kW setup with a 55kWh battery, though the tested car matched China’s higher-spec Ultra+ trim.
Design and Interior
The 8X presents a sleek, premium look, though its prominent silver grille and roof-mounted LiDAR bump may not suit all tastes. Inside, it offers heated and cooled massaging front seats, power-folding rear seats, dual wireless chargers, a head-up display, and nappa leather throughout, along with subtle luxury cues like faux wood and metal trim. Dual 16-inch driver and passenger screens provide sharp displays and strong camera quality, paired with a solid Naim sound system, wireless smartphone connectivity, and multiple USB-C ports.
Space and Practicality
Measuring 5100mm long, 1998mm wide, and 1780mm tall, the 8X offers ample second-row space, a large boot, underfloor storage, and rear seatback tables, making it a practical family SUV.
Driving Experience
Powered by two electric motors and a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder producing a combined 660kW and 935Nm, the 8X can run in hybrid, electric, or pure petrol modes. On-ice testing showed balanced steering, strong power delivery, and a smooth but controlled ride thanks to dual-chamber air suspension and active roll bars, outperforming the Denza B5 Leopard in refinement, though not quite matching the Range Rover Sport. The cabin remained notably quiet even after extended testing.
