7.6 Earthquake hits Papua New Guinea-Newzealand

Earthquake-Papua New Guinea-Newzealand

Auckland, New Zealand — Authorities report that a strong earthquake struck a rural area of Papua New Guinea early on Sunday morning has killed at least three people. The magnitude 7.6 earthquake that shook the Pacific nation also left other people hurt and infrastructure damaged.

Photos showed road splits that have sprung and debris spread across streets, although the amount of damage still seems to be unknown.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the Papua New Guinea earthquake occurred close to Kainantu, a town with a population of around 8,000, at about 90 kilometers  below earth’s surface.

No significant population areas likely to be in the line of the tremor’s strongest waves, according to Jana Pursley, a geophysicist with the USGS, who indicated that damage could be moderate to heavy.
