The Conservative MP David Davis says the government’s plans to help Afghan refugees resettle in the UK falls short.
The new scheme will see the UK take up to 20,000 vulnerable Afghans over the coming years and the government has faced criticism, including from some on its own backbenchers, that it is not moving quickly enough after it said it would take 5,000 in the programme’s first year.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Davis said: “We are having to make decisions pretty fast, pretty much on the hoof but what I think we can guarantee is that 5,000 [refugees] is not going to be anywhere near enough.”
