Minnesota man tests positive for Omicron variant after NYC trip | New York Post

A Minnesota resident who recently traveled to New York City tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19, officials announced Thursday.

The fully vaccinated man experienced “mild symptoms” of the virus on Nov. 22 and was tested two days later, after attending an anime convention at the Javits Center on Manhattan’s West Side from Nov. 19 to Nov. 21, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

The Hennepin County resident’s COVID-19 symptoms have “resolved,” the health department said.

The news comes after White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Center for Disease Control announced Monday that the first known US case of the Omicron variant — to which existing vaccines likely provide a degree of protection — had been found in San Francisco.

The fully vaccinated person had traveled to South Africa and tested positive for the new variant on Monday. Omicron, first named on Friday, has been detected in more than 20 countries around the globe, and has recently sunk US markets.
