Beyonce Dubbed “Not An ICON” by THIS Singer!

We all know the drill: bow down to Queen Bey. But… apparently not everyone thinks Beyonce has quite earned her status as an “icon” just yet.

Hey guys, it’s Sussan Mourad and yes, Beyonce IS a queen. Period. I mean, we don’t have enough time for me to remind you of all the reasons why but let’s be real, from Lemonade to Coachella, everything Beyonce does can very well have the world spin off its axis.

But… the question at hand here isn’t whether Beyonce’s a queen. It’s whether she’s an icon- and legend-in-her-own-right and it seems Dionne Warwick doesn’t think Beyonce has earned that title JUUUST yet!

Dionne spoke with Essence Magazine and, like the rest of us, gushed about B. She told the mag that Beyonce is obviously talented and has grown a LOT over the years.

But despite being proud of the “Formation” singer, Dionne doesn’t think that Bey’s career has reached “iconic” status.

She told the publication that QUOTE: “Now sustaining and becoming a big icon that Gladys Knight or Patti Labelle, or Johnny Mathis, or Frank Sinatra, or Sammy Davis Jr. is? I doubt that.”

That sounds like kind of a rough burn. But, for what it’s worth, Dionne wasn’t just talking about Beyonce. She actually said she doesn’t think any of “today’s” artists are iconic. She questioned whether anyone would ever be singing the hits of today down the line… but added that she didn’t mean to be throwing shade.

It’s worth nothing that when it comes to Beyonce, it’s not that Dionne thinks she could NEVER be an icon, it just is too soon to tell.

She said QUOTE “And I love her to death and can appreciate her talent. But that iconic status? It’s a long road [ahead].”

To put it into perspective- Beyonce is just 37 years old. She broke into the music biz since 1997, so that’s 22 years of hard work.
That is a LOOOONG time. Dionne on the other hand, is 78 years old- and has been at it for 60 YEARS … since starting her career 1959.

But this leaves a lot of questions to be asked. Is securing “icon” status a matter of how much time an artist puts in? Or, is it more about the work they put in within a time frame? And the BIGGER question here is… do you think it’s fair to say Beyonce’s not an icon yet?

There’s a LOT to unpack here, and I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on this. Definitely chat it out in the comments below.
