Taylor Swift dropped a bomb on the world when she announced her new album name, release date, and countdown for a new single, and we are anything but calm.
What’s up guys, it’s your host Emile Ennis Jr. back here on Clevver News and once again Taylor Swift has strategically made herself the MOST relevant by releasing a GLAAD-boosting, homophobia-bashing anthem that we just quite can’t ourselves to take off repeat… but then again, if you heard it, you’d probably understand.
Tay first announced the new track during an Instagram Live she hosted yesterday to which she shared the title of her 18-track seventh studio album, Lover, dropped new merch, and revealed that she’d also release the second single just hours later, to be called, “You Need To Calm Down.” Ironically, not one Swiftie soul in the universe was able to actually calm down.
In what might be her most political piece yet, Taylor dropped the track at midnight last night, which generated WAVES of reaction due to its efforts in tackling self-expression, bullying, double standards, being gay, just like, calming the heck down, and as if you haven’t already added this to your playlist yet, you gotta take a listen:
Making its way to a long list of anti-bully Taylor tracks, many fans are sharing their two cents on “You Need To Calm Down”, and the theories have already started rolling in, like yesterday.
Many believe Taylor to be trolling Donald Trump, mostly over the fact that she straight up dropped the single on his birthday, and if there’s anything we know about Taylor, it’s that literally everything, down to the last sequin, is calculated.
She then dedicates a significant portion of the song to anti-gay activists, in the most cheerful way possible. In the first verse, Tay reflects on her social media mentions, writing, “You are somebody that I don’t know / But you’re takin’ shots at me like it’s Patron / And I’m just like, damn, it’s 7 a.m. / Say it in the street, that’s a knockout / But you say it in a tweet, that’s a cop-out.”
Many fans have also noticed in the lyrics video that in many of the specific words, only the “EA” are different colors. Theories have pointed to the fact that this could stand for Equality Act, something that Taylor has been heavily advocating as of late.
The GLAAD reference is also not your typical joyful reaction to something — in the lyric video, it is spelled exactly like the acronym in the LGBTQ organization. This certainly didn’t go unnoticed as the official GLAAD account even tweeted QUOTE, “omg she really did that” in honor of the song.
Many fans also took to Twitter to express their feelings toward Taylor’s attempt in canceling homophobes, tweeting things like “Listen up lgbt swifties can you imagine screaming “shade never made anybody less gay” at the ts7 tour with all your friends because I can and… I’m crying”
Other fans reacted after first hearing the song (and then hearing it again for the 87th time) with tweets writing, “She really went from “they took the crown but it’s alright” to “we all know now we all got crowns” I’m crying face emoji” and comparing the polar opposite theme of Reputation vs. Lover, with this tweet that read, “this woman is something else.”
Why do I have a feeling she’s only JUST getting started…? Taylor has been openly using her platform when breaking her political silence in urging fans to write letters to their senators, backing the Equality Act, which will outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ people in public places, and getting a rise out of her own Republican senator by doing the same.
We can only imagine what the full music video will entail, set to drop on Monday June 17th, especially due to the fact that Taylor mentioned QUOTE, “I wanted you to hear the song first, then see the video. Because the video is very worth the wait. There’s a lot going on in the video so I wanted that to be a separate discovery.”
