THIS Lion King Joke Just Cost Him $27M!

Can a joke cost you $27M 💸

Lebohang “Lebo M” Morake, the legendary composer and voice behind The Lion King’s opening chant, has filed a $27 million lawsuit against comedian Learnmore Jonasi following a viral podcast segment.

The controversy stems from Jonasi’s claim that the Zulu lyrics in “The Circle of Life” simply translate to, “Look, a lion. Oh my god, a lion,” rather than their intended spiritual meaning.

While the joke sparked a wave of viral TikTok trends, Lebo M views the remark as a “sick” insult to African culture and his professional reputation, leading to the dramatic moment where Jonasi was served legal papers live on stage at the Laugh Factory.

The legal battle centers on a complex dispute over translation and cultural intent, especially given the linguistic similarities between Zulu and Ndebele. Lebo M maintains the lyrics actually mean “All hail the king,” and his legal team is pushing forward despite public scrutiny.

Many fans have pointed out a perceived double standard, noting that members of the 2019 Lion King remake cast, including Seth Rogen, made nearly identical jokes years ago without facing legal action.
