We all know that after a breakup, sometimes you just need a change. And that couldn’t be more true for The Weeknd who seems to change his hair every time he goes through a big break up.
What’s up? It’s Drew Dorsey here with Clevver News and I feel like women often get the reputation of cutting their hair after a breakup, but The Weeknd is proving that anyone who wants that sort of post-breakup change can get it.
In case you missed it, he and his long time on again off again girlfriend Bella Hadid broke up earlier this summer and now he was just spotted rocking a new look at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
And I have to admit, I had to do a double take because I hardly recognized The Weeknd.
Not only did he switch up his hairstyle, but he also shaved his full beard and left just the mustache.
His whole look is very 80’s throwback and honestly kind of resembles Lionel Richie.
Now, Can we get a side by side? Yes I definitely see it and I love the inspo.
And this is The Weeknd’s first red carpet appearance since he and Bella split.
Back in August a source told E! News that the long distance played a part in their decision to breakup. The insider said with their crazy-busy schedules they quote, “haven’t spent quality time together in months.”
And it looks like The Weekend isn’t the only one having a post-break up hair glow up moment.
Bella also got a new ‘do too.
She debuted her new blonde hair at the VMA’s and has been seen continuing to rock it at New York Fashion Week.
And I have to admit, I love her new blonde look. There’s nothing like a single girl living her best life as a blonde.
But anyway, back to The Weeknd because now that I think about it, his break ups have inspired a full blown hair evolution.
He and Bella became an official item back in 2015 when he had his iconic tied up hair style.
And as time went on and his music got bigger and bigger, so did his hair.
But in 2016, when he and Bella went through their first break up, we got a drastic hair change.
It was the Starboy era and he revealed his new trim cut.
I’ll be honest, I was shocked when he ditched his iconic look for this sleeker look.
And The Weeknd’s friends and family were too. He told the Wall Street Journal that quote, “I told everybody I was getting rid of it, and everybody — literally, unanimously — they were like, ‘No, don’t do it! That’s your whole thing, that’s you.’ And the way they said that, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m definitely cutting it now.’”
So I think that’s proof that break ups can really create a whole new era and look for someone.
Though, he did say that the change was also somewhat about comfort.
He said that the longer hairstyle made it harder for him to sleep and he could sleep easier with shorter hair.
He told the Wall Street Journal that quote, “It was actually very uncomfortable. I could only sleep on one side of my face. Now the sleep is amazing.”
But you know what also makes sleeping amazing? Someone to cuddle with.
Which is fitting because that’s when we saw The Weeknd move on to a new love interest in 2017 — Selena Gomez.
He attended the Met Gala with Selena rocking his shorter hair and these two were really leaning into the PDA that night.
But when they broke up 10 months later his hair stayed pretty much stayed the same. Shortly after in 2019, he and Bella rekindled their love.
That’s when he started to grow his hair out a bit more again.
At Kylie’s 21st birthday the two are seen here and you can see his slightly longer hair.
Long hair, don’t care, am I right?
But that brings me back to where we are today with The Weeknd’s new 80’s inspired look after his most recent break up with Bella.
And with the rumors that he and Bella still have hope to get back together… I can only imagine what hairstyle is coming next, for both of them.
