What’s up guys? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and we all know that earlier this year the Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland was up in the air due to Disney and Sony’s disagreement, but what you might not know, is that there’s a funny backstory to how Tom Holland got the good news when they came to an agreement. And in case you missed it, we were all worried sick about what would happen to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise when Disney and Sony’s deal went south. The companies publicly parted ways over the summer, after they were not able to reach an agreement that would have given new terms to a co-financing stake between the two studios. Initially, this might have meant that the rights to the character reverted to just Sony and Tom wouldn’t appear in any more Marvel movies. But around one month later, they were able to strike a deal that would allow Marvel produce another Spider-Man film for Sony.At the time, the terms of the new deal were not disclosed and Sony declined to comment on the terms, but said quote, “We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans. We are delighted to be moving forward together.”And we were just excited that they came to an agreement because that meant another Spider-Man movie starring our favorite superhero Tom Holland, sorry I mean, Peter Parker. The movie is set to come out July 16, 2021. But that isn’t all. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in a future Marvel Studios film.We are so ready for you phase 4!But aside from all the logistical drama that went down when trying to figure out if this film was going to be or not to be, there’s actually a really funny backstory to how Tom found out he was going to be continuing in his role.He was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday night and said the whole thing started at the Disney convention D23. He explained how upsetting it was to be there when the news came out because he wasn’t allowed to be a part of any of the Marvel moments. He went on to reveal that he asked for Disney CEO Bob Iger’s email, and sent him a note.
Tom ended up sending the email and the CEO replied right away saying that he wanted to talk to him over the phone. And Tom said he’s free to talk whenever. But after not hearing anything for a few days, Tom was at a bar enjoying some beers at a trivia night with his family.I mean, as if we couldn’t possibly love Tom more, this is the most relatable moment ever. But anyway, back to the phone call. This was when Bob revealed to Tom that there might actually be a way to make another Spider-Man film work. Bob talked about how there were a bunch of phone calls back and forth but they wanted Tom’s opinion. And Tom also said quote, “It was really interesting for me to have this two studio heads ask what do you think?”Which must have been a huge honor for an actor. And it clearly was for Tom, because he revealed that he started crying on the phone call. Which is completely understandable for a lot of reasons… & We’re sure the few beers didn’t help when it came to him containing control of his emotions either. And I couldn’t agree more. And fans are so glad things have all worked out the way they did.Us too, and we just can’t wait til the next Spider-Man movie comes out… in 2021.But to hold us over until then, Tom is promoting his new animated movie with Will Smith called “Spies in Disguise. And though Tom and Will starred in this movie together, they only recently met for the first time.So where did they decide to hangout for the first time?None other than an escape room of course. Where all great friendships start. And apparently they totally nailed the escape room, which is fitting because their movie is about being spies and all.But Tom later revealed that he wasn’t much help when it came to getting out of there,So that’s what I’ve been doing wrong! I’ll make sure to hit up Will Smith next time my friends and I want to go to an escape room.Seems easy enough. But I want to know what you guys think about all of this.
Were you surprised to hear that Tom was out at drinks when he got that call from Disney’s CEO? And which movie are you most excited for in Marvel’s phase 4?
