Residents in the liberal Bay Area town of Millbrae are trying to block a proposal to transform a hotel located near a school into housing for the homeless.
The tiny liberal town 15 miles south of San Francisco — where the average home price is $1.9 million — is slated to approve the Project Homekey plan to turn a La Quinta hotel into a 99-unit apartment complex for unhoused people.
But hundreds of angry residents opposed to the project packed a community room on Friday to voice their concerns.
“It’s very close to children,” Millbrae resident Ho Yeung told NBC Bay Area. “It’s a block from three schools. So we don’t want to see that.”

A Nebraska FedEx courier named Matt Govier went above and beyond the call of package delivery duty after heroically killing a rattlesnake that was lurking on a woman’s front porch.
Doorbell camera footage of the courageous deed is blowing up online as viewers praise the deliveryman for his bravery.
“I nominate Matt Govier for FedEx employee of the year!” wrote the woman, Christie Jones, in a Facebook post describing the parcel transporter’s serpent slaying.
The homeowner had reportedly been alerted to the deed after receiving a text message that read: “I hope you didn’t have a pet rattlesnake at your front door because I killed him. Sorry about the blood.”

Rushed by a hammer-wielding man as he left his apartment building in Melbourne, Australia with his dog, Nicholas Cameron “fought for his life.”
When police arrived just six minutes later they found the 39-year-old fatally injured between two cars and arrested his attacker, Stuart Lindsay Heron, who was trying to leave the scene.
Heron claimed he had spent hours waiting to confront Cameron, a man he did not know, after seeing him “dealing ice to kids.”
But two folders, one titled “target” and the other “Heide,” would identify the real reason he was murdered.

Former President Donald Trump plans to turn himself in Thursday to the Fulton County jail where he has agreed to post a $200,000 bond in the case charging him with illegally trying to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election result.

A woman narrowly escaped death after someone threw a spear through her windshield while she was driving on a Texas highway.
Shavone Canales was traveling on Interstate 10 in San Antonio around 9:30 p.m. on Monday when the metal weapon smashed through her front windshield, according to police.
Fortunately, the spear was stopped by her steering wheel and Canales was not injured.
She said she never saw the suspect.

Louisville Metro police officers climbed through the second-floor window of a decrepit home last Wednesday night after neighbors reported hearing screams for help.

The wildfire service in British Columbia has released dramatic footage of what they described as a fire whirl spinning over a lake during an out-of-control wildfire.
According to the fire service, the video was captured by ground personnel at the scene of the Downton Lake wildfire in the Gun Lake area on August 17.
The formation was the result of a “combination of high fire intensity, strong winds and air mass instability,” the fire service said.
“Fire whirls are an incredibly rare phenomenon,” they said. “These unique conditions and extreme fire behaviour are not experienced on the majority of fires in British Columbia.”
By August 23, the fire had burned some 7,382 hectares (over 18,200 acres), according to the wildfire service.

The family and friends of a missing South Carolina woman reportedly fear she was last with suspected Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann — a possibility being investigated by police.

A Texas man opened fire on a pair of suspects who tried to break into his home over the weekend in a wild scene caught in doorbell footage.
One of the suspects, Aaron Contreras, knocked on the apartment door of Ethan Rodriguez on Saturday evening and claimed to be a maintenance worker there to check on the filters in his air conditioner, according to doorbell camera footage and an affidavit obtained by Fox Dallas.
