Manual MINI models are coming back to the US next year

Auto and Cars
Manual MINI models are coming back to the US next year Earlier this year, MINI announced it will be pulling its manual cars from sale in the United States. It was speculated that the intake rate was low and that prompted the Brits to stop offering a stick shift altogether. However, MINI USA always said this would be a temporary measure. Today, we learned that they are staying true to their word. According to Car and Driver the hiatus will soon be over and manual MINI models are making a comeback on the North American continent next year. There is a bit of a catch though: not all models will get the manual back. To be fair, fans of the brand are lucky that the Brits are even offering a manual still, as the trend is obviously going against shifting your own gears. Nevertheless, they are s...

SPIED: BMW 4 Series gets caught in the snow yet again Despite the heavy criticism for its monstrous grille, we’re some of the few believers in the upcoming BMW 4 Series and its design. Yes, each one of its Kidney Grilles will be larger than a human child but the rest of it is going to look very surprisingly good. Or at least that’s how it seems from the increasing amount of spy photos we’re seeing. The latest of which show the next-gen 4 Series Coupe doing some winter testing. (We don’t own the photos but they can be seen here) In these new photos, we see a heavily camouflaged 4 Series Coupe working itself out in the snow. Grille size aside, I think the next-gen 4er is going to be one of the very best looking cars in the segment. It has proportions and styling si...

Villa d’Este organizers add a new class to the roster, for ’60s-’80s racers Next year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este’s theme has already been announced earlier this year and yet today, the organizing committee decided to add another class to the mix. Endurance racing cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s will also be lining up at the start of the contest for historically significant automobiles from 22 to 24 May 2020. The class “From Swinging Sixties to Awesome Eighties: Two Decades of Endurance Racing” brings the heyday of 12 and 24 hour races to life again at Villa d’Este. This new category will be taking a closer look at an era when BMW used to dominate various motorsport events. It was in the 1960s and the 1970s that cars like the BMW 3.0...

2022 Formula E Gen 3 Cars with 470 hp and a 780 kg weight The FIA has issued the technical specs for the 2022 Formula E Gen 3 cars. The new specs will cover three seasons until 2025. Tender documents covering the chassis, which includes a front powertrain kit for regeneration purposes, the battery and tire tenders must be submitted to the FIA by March 31, 2020. The Invitations to Tender (ITT) detail dimensional requirements and weight-saving, which include a target weight of 284 kg for the Gen 3 battery. The current battery pack weighs 385 kilograms. The new target calls for a weight of 780 kg, including the driver. That would make the 2022 Gen 3 car 120 kg lighter than the current model. The maximum power of the cars is set to be 470 hp (350 kW) in qualifying mode and Attack Mode duri...

New Year’s Revolution — Here are the top BMWs to look forward to in 2020 This past year was an interesting one for BMW. Cars like the M8 Gran Coupe, M2 CS, M235i Gran Coupe and X3 M have all been released, making it an impactful year for the brand. However, next year will be even bigger and could potential set BMW for years to come. It could be the first major stepping stone toward the future. So let’s take a look at the top BMWs to look forward to in 2020. BMW M3/M4 There’s quite a lot of controversy surrounding the next-gen BMW M3/M4, mostly due to their design. More specifically, their grille design. The next-gen M3/M4 will sport an all-new grille design that will act as a massive departure from the rest of the brand’s lineup. Both cars will get a grille design simi...

Video: BMW M5 drag races Dodge Challenger Hellcat in 2WD mode The Dodge Challenger Hellcat was brought into this world to dominate drag strips. The problem is it didn’t really work out that way for Dodge. The car has incredible amounts of power but along with all those horses came a lot of issues as well. The biggest issue is putting the power down. There are cars out there managing to efficiently transfer over 700 HP to the road through solely two wheels but the Challenger is not one of them, right from the factory. With non-street-legal tires, it’s a drag-strip monster but it struggles with regular road tires. If you’ve ever seen a McLaren 720S drag racing, you probably know it’s a real monster of a car. It demolishes some pretty fast all-wheel drive adversarie...

Auto and Cars
BMW driver line-up for 2020 IMSA: Spengler, De Phillipi, Edwards and Krohn BMW’s driver roster for next year’s IMSA Championship is shaping up rather nicely. Just the other day we learned about one really strong contender joining the ranks, with Bruno Spengler throwing his name in the hat. Today the entire line-up was announced and it includes John Edwards and Jesse Krohn, both of whom raced the BMW M8 GTE last year as well and Connor De Phillippi who will share his car with Spengler. Edwards and Krohn will continue aboard the #24 BMW M8 GTE run by BMW Team RLL while the second car of the team, the #25 BMW M8 GTE will have Spengler and De Phillippi behind the wheel. “Once again BMW has given us a really good core of drivers to compete with in 2020. BMWBLOG Podcast Episode 10: Chris Harris, GMA T.50 and Classic Mini Our podcast has finally hit a small milestone — its tenth episode. That’s not even a drop in the bucket for most podcasts but it’s big for us. We had no real expectations going into it, as we’d never done any sort of podcasting before, and we were really just trying something out. However, we’ve been pleasantly surprised with how well it’s been received and how much fun we’ve had doing it. So for our tenth episode, we picked some good topics, such as Chris Harris’ comments about SUVs, the incredibly exciting Gordan Murray Automotive T.50 and a classic Mini Cooper S. For Chris Harris’ comments, I talk about what he recently said in an interview about the Aston Martin ...

Lucas Auer Joins BMW DTM Roster for 2020 Season Just the other day we learned about the departure of Bruno Spengler from the DTM, to join the North American IMSA. While that news did sting a little, BMW announced a new driver joining the DTM roster for next year, Lucas Auer. The Austrian will actually be making a comeback to the championship after a year-long hiatus, this time driving for BMW. The news came through the wire today and, so far, BMW has five drivers lined up for next year. Alongside Lucas Auer, BMW fans will also get to see two-time champion Marco Wittmann return behind the wheel of the BMW M4 DTM alongside Philipp Eng, Timo Glock and Sheldon van der Linde. Unfortunately, Joel Eriksson will no longer be in action in the BMW M4 DTM. As for Auer, he made his debut with Merc...

Auto and Cars
VIDEO: This tuned F90 BMW M5 nearly has Veyron-level power Literally no one has ever driven the new BMW M5 and thought “Ya know what, it’s just not fast enough.” If anyone has ever even entertained that idea, they’re ready for the loony-bin. The current F90 M5 packs 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, can hit 60 mph in under three seconds and can get dangerously close to 200 mph simply by removing its software limiter. So it’s seriously fast. But what if you are insane and do want more power? That’s what Noelle Performance is for. The founder of Noelle Performance, Karl-Otto Noelle, used to be the Head Engine Development engineer for ALPINA. So he knows a thing or two about making BMW engines even more powerful than t...

Auto and Cars
The BMW M2 CS is the Ultimate 2 Series for 8 Series Money When the BMW M2 CS was first announced, fans of the brand rejoiced. Ever since the 2 Series Coupe first went on sale, fans immediately wondered what a more hardcore, track-ready M version would be like. Now that it’s finally here, you can imagine that those same fans want to put an M2 CS in their driveways. Unfortunately, that might be more difficult that the maybe they’d hoped. Pricing has recently been announced for the BMW M2 CS and it’s quite steep. The starting price for it is a whopping $83,600. And that’s before the $995 destination fee. So it’s not a cheap car. And what’s even more surprising is the company it’s in. Starting at just a few thousand dollars more, the BMW 840i Coupe ...

BMW Performance Center offers great deals on track days in January 2020 Attending the BMW M Driving School is arguably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Whether it was the M School on the East Coast or the Thermal Club in the west, the BMW Driving Programs put a smile on my face and, of course, they enhanced my driving skills. In 2014, BMW announced their second permanent BMW Performance Driving School in the United States which was later opened in April 2015. The location chosen – the exclusive and picturesque Thermal Club in Palm Springs, California. The private race track is just three hours away from Los Angeles and right by where one of the world’s biggest music festivals takes place in the Coachella Valley, and near Indian Wells....

BMW Designer: “iNext, the i4 and the iX3 will get separated kidneys”

Auto and Cars
BMW Designer: “iNext, the i4 and the iX3 will get separated kidneys” In 2018, BMW unveiled a vision car of the upcoming iNEXT electric vehicle. The concept car was extremely polarizing and as you’d expect, highly controversial. While the overall shapes resembled a classic BMW crossover, its front-end was a departure from the iconic styling cues. Arguably, it was the kidney grille which attracted the most criticism. The one piece grille is large in size, extending vertically from the lower bumper to the hood. It also featured a mesh grille which was filled behind it with numerous sensors.  At the time, BMW Group VP of Design, Adrian Van Hooydonk said: “If you look at the front, you see the most prominent element, the BMW kidney, a vertical kidney, with a butterfly layou...

Over a 15 years career in the DTM, Spengler raced in 195 races and in 2012, won the Drivers’ Championship in the BMW Bank M3 DTM. Spengler’s first race as a regular driver for BMW Team RLL in the BMW M8 GTE is just around the corner. He will compete in the 24 Hours of Daytona (USA) at the end of January. Spengler will also remain a reserve and test driver for BMW i Andretti Motorsport in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. “Very few drivers have had as big an influence on the DTM as Bruno Spengler has in the past 15 years,” said BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marq...

Here are our Seven Favorite Cars from the BMW Museum For BMW enthusiasts, there may not be a better place on Earth than the BMW Welt. Especially the BMW Museum. There, you can see some of the most amazing and iconic automobiles ever to come out of Munich, cars that you’d likely never see anywhere else outside of the Welt. We were just recently in Munich with BMW and, while there, took some photos of our favorite cars on display. So check them out. Alexander Calder BMW 3.0 CSL While the Andy Warhol BMW Art Car is the most famous, the bet looking of them all is arguably the Alexander Calder car. Warhol painted a BMW M1, which is an awesome car, but the BMW 3.0 CSL racer done by Calder is a prettier car, even before the art. Its iconic shape and classic sports car proportions ...

Auto and Cars
Next-Gen MINI Clubman might get bigger, almost SUV-sized At the moment, the MINI Clubman is just about the perfect car in the brand’s lineup. It’s not too much bigger than the standard Cooper but it has enough extra usable space to make it practical as a daily family car. Yet, it’s no so big that it’s too heavy and bloated to be fun. However, that might unfortunately change moving forward, as per this new report from Autocar. According to this report, MINI Chief designer Oliver Heilmer told Autocar that the next-gen MINI Clubman might get a bit bigger, almost Countryman-size. There’s no word if that means the Countryman will also experience some growth, giving the brand two SUVs; one small and one large. However, there is talk that MINI is losing Countryman...

After the BMW 3 Series GT (F34 model generation) got discontinued, the 6 Series GT of the G32 model generation is also facing the axe. Before this happens officially, BMW is set to give the luxury shuttle one final makeover before the inherent dismissal after the current generation. According to some rumors, the US market won’t even receive the LCI model series. Many fans have expressed their negative feelings towards what they felt was an awkward-looking, unworthy BMW. The 6 Series GT emerged with this nomenclature to fill the void left by the discontinuation of the standard 6 Series models....

VIDEO: BMW M8 Competition featured on Carfection Both Horatiu and I have driven the new BMW M8 Competition Coupe and it’s pretty wild ride. It’s such a brutal car, one that’s so violently fast, but it’s also so incredibly capable that you simply just hang one while it pummels pavement into submission. However, our experience has been limited to mostly track time, with some very little road time. So what’s the big brute like to actually drive on the road? We find out in this latest video from Carfection. In this new video review, Henry Catchpole gets to hoon the new BMW M8 Competition through some stunning, twisty canyon roads. While he seems very impressed with its power and capability, he’s quick to point out that it’s not some sort of scalpel-...

Every car enthusiast in the world… Ya know what, let me start again. Everyone in the world loves the McLaren F1 because it’s one of the very most sensational driving machines in the history of the world, has a center-seating position and possibly the greatest internal combustion engine noise of all time. That last bit is what really drives BMW fans nuts, as the F1 was powered by a BMW M-developed engine. Now, though, two and a half decades later, the man behind the F1 is about to do it again. No BMW X2 electric planned, X1 BEV still in the books Earlier this week, a set of spy photos surfaced from Germany. The images were allegedly of a BMW X2 electric prototype being tested ahead of its release. Unfortunately, those news were incorrect. According to our sources, BMW has no current plans to offer an electric crossover based on the X2 model. Instead, we will be getting a plug-in hybrid sometimes within the next year with a similar drivetrain as the one found in the X1 PHEV. The plugin X1 uses a 1.5 liter 3-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive specially developed for this model. The petrol engines delivers a peak output of 92 kW/125 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Newton meters. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed Steptronic transmission. The electric mo...

Listen to Chris Harris Discuss the Auto Industry’s Failure to Lead Chris Harris has become one of the most highly respected motoring journalists in the industry. While Harris can be quite blunt when speaking about cars he doesn’t like, something he isn’t shy about doing, his opinion matters in this industry. Over the years, he’s been quite outspoken about his distaste for SUVs and, especially SUV “Coupes”. In a recent video from Top Gear, Harris talks about mainly the Aston Martin DBX but also about the state of the industry as a whole and its move toward crossovers and SUVs. And it’s worth listening to for the bigger picture. While this video isn’t directly about BMW, it’s hard to not lump the Bavarian brand into the argument. BMW invente...
