Auto and Cars
BMW Orders batteries worth over €10 Billion from CATL and Samsung The electric revolution seems to be in full swing. Even though some manufacturers – BMW included – are still considering hydrogen as a potential alternate to ICE cars as well, customers are demanding more EVs than ever and their demands will have to be met. Last year BMW announced the signing of its biggest battery order in history from Chinese manufacturer CATL but today, that milestone was overshot, yet again. BMW announced an order volume increase to €7.3 billion from CATL alone, with an additional order of €2.9 billion from Samsung SDI. These batteries will be done to BMW’s specifications and will be used for fifth-generation electric drive trains from 2021 out. Initially, BMW announced a deal with CATL worth €4 billi...

SPIED: New BMW X2 xDrive25e scooped on streets After the new X1 LCI generation received its plug-in hybrid variant, BMW will extend the technology to the X2 Sports Activity Coupe as well. Slated for debut next year, the new BMW X2 xDrive25e will mark the entrance of the compact SAC into the world of electrification. The new plug-in hybrid X2 is just one of the many electrified models that BMW is planning to roll out until 2023. The test car that was recently spotted by spy photographers could have easily gone as a standard ICE version. The only relevant signs we are dealing with a plug-in hybrid is the door placed “Hybrid Test Vehicle” sticker and the opening cover for the charging port, positioned on the front left wing. Pictured: BMW X2 The series X2 xDrive25e will have a seamless in...

2019 LA Auto Show: Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion — A Fun EV Wagon

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion — A Fun EV Wagon One of the more interesting cars to debut at the 2019 LA Auto Show was the all-new Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion. Oddball name aside, the Space Vizzion is an all-electric wagon with an eye on fun and urban mobility. While that’s not the most exciting sounding car in the world, we love the idea of automakers coming out with more fun wagons, especially electric ones. The Volkswagen ID Space Vizzion is based on the VW Group’s all-electric architecture, dubbed MEB. Get his, this new all-electric Volkswagen wagon is rear-wheel drive. It comes with a single electric motor at the rear axle that makes about 275 hp. That won’t impress any Tesla fans but it’s more than enough to be fun. Plus, this is a family wagon, not a performance c...

BMW aims to cut spending by over €12 billion by 2022 It looks like BMW is going to have to start spending money a bit more carefully in the following years. Considering all the troublesome news coming in, from possible trade wars to the increasing budgets needed to develop electric vehicles, BMW announced today, through its CFO, that it’s aiming to cut its spending by as much as €12 billion (over $13 billion) by 2022. At the moment, no jobs are in peril though as the Germans say the employment levels will remain steady, at the 2018 levels. According to Automotive News, Nicolas Peter, the current Chief Financial Officer in Munich, told analysts during a meeting on Wednesday that the company is talking things over with suppliers and union leaders, regarding these issues. “We are currently...

Our Top Five Cars for the 2019 LA Auto Show The press days for the 2019 LA Auto Show are now over and the public days are underway. So since we’re finally home and back to the daily grind, we thought we’d give you our top five cars from LA. To be honest, honing the list down to five was quite difficult, as there were so many interesting and exciting cars debuting in LA. But, we’ll give it a shot. 5. Land Rover Defender It’s not often when a boxy SUV really captures the hearts of car enthusiasts but it happened at the LA Auto Show. The all-new Land Rover Defender is likely the coolest SUV in the world right now, with its rugged demeanor, boxy styling and genuine off-road capability. It just oozes cool and it has a great interior to boot. It’s also the first Defender to be sold in the ‘S...

M Boss confirms 2021 BMW M3/M4 will “differentiate very much from base models” Despite our numerous reports on the design of the 2021 BMW M3/M4 – based on several sources – there was still plenty of skepticism around the validity of our reporting. Even after a factory leak gave us an early look at the front-end of the G80 M3, many BMW fans have refuted the possibility of a very large kidney grille on the beloved M3. So naturally, during our conversation with the BMW M CEO Markus Flasch, we had to ask the question: Was that leak accurate and what should we expect from the 2021 BMW M3 and M4? Rendering by @Avarvarii “M3/M4 are the legend. As you mentioned also, the cars will differentiate very much from the base models. We have gone to a greater extent that we have done in the past. The ...

Auto and Cars
M fans will be able to get the 2021 BMW M3 with manual and RWD In our podcast with BMW M CEO Markus Flasch, the new M boss confirmed our previous reports – the upcoming 2021 BMW M3 will be offered with a manual transmission which is only paired with the RWD. This is basically the model that was labeled internally as “Pure.” “M3/M4 is the legend. You will still get a rear-wheel drive car and you can get it with a manual,” Flasch said. Recently, the M boss also confirmed the S58 engine. “The next BMW M3 will have the brand new S58 engine that we’re launching in the X3 M and X4 M,” he said. “It will have 480bhp in the standard version and 510bhp in the Competition version.” In the past, Flasch said that even though the internal name for the manual M3 was “Pure”, that the name was purely a...

Auto and Cars
Video: 2020 BMW X6 Review finds it better than ever The new BMW X6 is getting delivered in various countries around the world as we speak. The new model has some pretty big shoes to fill, as peculiar as that might sound. Yes, a lot of people have hated on the X6 ever since it first came out but the Sports Activity Coupe from Munich has proven to be quite a sales success. The new model has a lot of work to do to keep that momentum going and according to this review, it could very well do it. The guys from What Car took the new X6 out for a spin at its International Media Launch and came back with an impressive review that covers most aspects of the new model. They also took their time to explain the new design which, undoubtedly, will be the biggest talking point for the new X6. That’s b...

Auto and Cars
Video: BMW Z4 vs Cayman S and Audi TT RS pre-owned comparison It’s not a secret anymore that the pre-owned market is doing rather well these days. The rapid depreciation of most cars coupled with the different view buyers have towards actually owning a car means sales of new cars are not growing at a fast pace. At the same time, pre-owned models are more and more popular. Thus, looking at an older model and buying a fun car are now no longer two drastically different concepts. The people over at Fifth Gear seem to be embracing this new trend rather wholeheartedly. Yesterday we were telling you about the BMW i3 and how they consider it to be quite the bargain on the second hand market. Today we’re looking at sports cars. With the BMW Z4 attracting a lot of attention to itself recently, s...

BMWBLOG Podcast Episode 6 — Horatiu Joins to Talk BMW M2 CS and i4 Our latest episode of the BMWBLOG Podcast is live. It’s actually been live for a couple of days now and we apologize for any delays. We’ve been at the LA Auto Show this week and been trying our hardest to bring you all the best content we can and will continue to do so. In this latest episode, Horatiu joins me to talk about some of the hottest BMW topics, including the BMW M2 CS We obviously talk about the M2 CS, as it’s probably the hottest BMW to debut in a long time. Even though we recorded this episode prior to the LA Auto Show, the M2 CS was absolutely the brand’s biggest hit in LA. And I’ve been a bit of a critic of the M2 CS’ design, for not looking different enough from the standard car, I must say it looks great...

No less than three BMW M6 GT3 cars will be heading down to the legendary Kyalami track to wow the crowd with a great performance. BMW Team Schnitzer will probably win most of the applause as they will have local hero, Sheldon van der Linde behind the wheel of their BMW M6 GT3. This will be no easy feat at Team Schnitzer had just raced in Macau last weekend, this being a true logistics challenge for the team members. This will be the fifth race on five continents held by the Intercontinental GT Challenge season which will draw to a close on Sunday. Alongside BMW Team Schnitzer we’ll also be seeing Walknehorst Motorsport with two BMW M6 GT3 cars. ...

2019 LA Auto Show: 2020 Audi S8 — BMW M760i Competitor

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: 2020 Audi S8 — BMW M760i Competitor It seems like all cars in this uber-high-performance luxury car segment are just becoming gigantic, squishy, straight-line bullet trains. They’re all astonishingly quick but lack the sort of grace that used to make cars like the E38 BMW 7 Series and D2-generation Audi A8 so wonderful to drive. The all-new Audi S8 seems as if it wants to change all of that, though, and it just debuted in North America at the 2019 LA Auto Show. The BMW M760Li is a good example of these cars becoming faster but less interesting to drive. Its monster V12 is incredibly powerful and makes the car very fast in a straight line. But its squishy suspension and asteroid-like curb weight push it further from the legendary E38-generation than ever before. The sa...

2019 LA Auto Show: Porsche Taycan — A Living Legend in the Flesh

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: Porsche Taycan — A Living Legend in the Flesh Arguably the most important car to debut at the 2019 LA Auto Show was the new Porsche Taycan 4S. We’ve all see the new Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models, with their blistering, mind-boggling performance. However, both of those cars wear supercar price tags. Which is what makes the Taycan 4S, with its more reasonable (relatively) price tag very interesting. The new Porsche Taycan 4S  might not be as exciting or as brutally fast as the Turbo or Turbo S models but it’s the more important car because it’s the one that’s priced similarly to the 911. So it has a real chance to cannibalize 911 sales, as traditional customers might want to get into something new and interesting. For $103,800 to start, the Porsche Taycan 4S uses two...

2019 LA Auto Show: Ford Mustang Mach-E — An Electric Mustang SUV?

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: Ford Mustang Mach-E — An Electric Mustang SUV? Quite possibly the most interesting car at the 2019 LA Auto Show, the new Ford Mustang Mach-E is also one of the important cars here at the show. The all-new Mustang Mach-E shares virtually nothing of importance with the standard Mustang and is, instead, an all-electric crossover with some Mustang bits slapped on it. Yet, despite that oddity, it seems like a very good car. Let’s address the elephant in the room first, though: the name. The new Ford Mustang Mach-E would have far more widely accepted if it weren’t named after one of the most iconic cars of all time. Turning the Mustang into an electric crossover not only seems like a bad idea on paper but it also might be a slippery slope. Now that Ford is comfortable slapp...

Auto and Cars
Photo Comparison: BMW X5 M meets the new archrival Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 The rivalry between BMW and Mercedes is about to get really intense, as the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 high-performance SUV enters the stage to battle with the BMW X5 M. BMW M and Mercedes-AMG have always been fierce competitors, with each of the divisions embracing a different philosophy on how to build a proper, premium high-performance car. While the Affalterbach-based opponent diluted in brand essence when it embarked on a journey to cover almost every market niche, the rival from Garching has approached a slightly more exclusivist path, with only some BMW models considered worthy enough to receive the performance treatment. With the occasion of the Los Angeles Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG premiered its all new GLE 63 l...

Right from its genesis, it was designed to allow maximum room in the cabin, putting a premium on refinement and class leading spaciousness for both front and rear occupants. Meanwhile, the exceptional stiffness inherent in the design of the new platform has also enabled DBX to achieve exceptional dynamics both on and off-road. Adaptive triple volume air suspension has been combined with the latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) and electronic adaptive dampers to provide the new SUV with a huge breadth of abi...

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: BMW X6 M Competition looks stunning The twins were out in LA this week. First, we met the BMW X5 M and it’s now the time to welcome the all-new BMW X6 M Competition. Both M SUVs took the front stage at the M stand in Los Angeles giving us a closer look at their bold, massive and sporty design. This is the first time the BMW X6 M is offered in Competition guise. The two previous generations were only offered in one flavor and that seemed to work out fine for the car so far. Up front, the BMW X6 M gets a more aggressive front bumper, with larger air intakes, and black accents on the Competition model. It also gets a rear roof spoiler in addition to a small decklid spoiler beneath it. There’s an interesting new rear bumper that houses quad exhaust pipes, the latter of w...

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: BMW M2 CS — Live in the Flesh Let’s face it, this is the car all of you have been waiting to see from the 2019 LA Auto Show. The BMW M2 CS is the hottest enthusiast car to come from Bavaria at the moment and it’s a car that enthusiasts have been waiting on for years. In fact, ever since the original BMW M2 launched, fans have been hoping for an M2 CS, something more hardcore than the standard model. Well, here it is. In person, it has some real menace. To be honest, I was personally a bit underwhelmed when I saw it in photos, upon its official reveal. Only because I felt that it wasn’t so much different from what a standard M2 Competition could look like with some M Performance add-ons. And while that’s still sort of true, there’s no denying its presence in the flesh...

2019 LA Auto Show: Audi e-tron Sportback — Electric BMW X4 Competitor

Auto and Cars
2019 LA Auto Show: Audi e-tron Sportback — Electric BMW X4 Competitor BMW used to have a monopoly on SUV “Coupes” but now several brands make their own. Taking it one step further is Audi, who has not only debuted a new coupe-like crossover at the LA Auto Show but it’s all-electric. The all-new Audi e-tron Sportback is a sportier looking version of the current e-tron SUV. While it’s essentially the same underneath the skin, it’s more stylish and exciting looking. From what we’re seeing here in LA, it looks surprisingly good. The fact that the Audi e-tron Sportback is essentially the same as the standard e-tron SUV, mechanically, is actually a good thing. We’ve driven the new Audi e-tron and it’s a great electric luxury car. It’s not perfect and it’s not going to light anyone’s hair on f...

This will be the first joint race event between the DTM and the Japanese Super GT Championship in Japan. Auto and Cars
Honda-Powered, all-wheel drive Classic Mini for sale at $49,000 Straight out of the ‘world of ingenious creations’ we’re bringing you one tough classic Mini today. This car is no longer in sync with its British origins but to some it may be even better this way. It also comes with an all-wheel drive system along with a myriad of other changes that make it unique. The best bit is that it can be yours right now, for $49,000. That’s quite a lot for such an old Mini but then again, you need to hear the rest of the story before passing judgement. The car was built by Minitec, a shop in Royston, Georgia that specializes in swapping Honda powertrains into Minis. According to the ad, over $80,0...

Auto and Cars
Video: 900 HP BMW E36 325i does 176 mph in 1/2 mile The tuning potential of BMW cars is one of the reasons why people love them to death, including the E36 generation. That potential has been present in all generations made so far and can still be found on certain models. Take the current Supra, for example. It has incredible tuning potential and some people are already talking about taking them to 1,000 HP. In the video below, we have a rather older model on display but with a similar power output. According to the description, this is a heavily modified BMW E36 325i. Thus, this is not an M model but it does come, stock, with a 6-cylinder engine. This particular model was modified by tuner Boostmode from Germany, a company specialized in forced induction monsters such as this one. Acco...

BMW calls it Generation 5 and it will be first seen on the BMW iX3, followed by the i4 and iNEXT. In a new video, BMW shows the crucial differences between eDrive generations 3 and 4 compared to the upcoming Gen5 technology. Based on the new electric architecture, at least 25 different BMW models with an electrified drive are expected to be on the market by 2023. One of the biggest changes in the new architecture is the battery pack. The new one features a flatter battery pack design with higher energy density packed inside. Guide: BMW Engine Codes Naming Convention

Guide: BMW Engine Codes Naming Convention

Auto and Cars
Guide: BMW Engine Codes Naming Convention For decades, BMW has used a unique naming convention for their BMW engines, which can be quite confusing to non-BMW insiders. BMW labels codes their engines under the B, M, N, P or S. In the past, the BMW Engine Codes Naming Convention was certainly simpler than it is today. The M10 was reserved for the four-cylinder unit, the M20 for a low-powered six-cylinder and M30 for high-powered straight sixes. But over the years, their fleet has expanded, as well as the engine offerings. Yet, some things remained consistent. The M Division labels their engines under the “S” code, while standard engines are categorized under the “M”, “N”, or “B” code. The Motorsport Racing division develops their units under the “P” code. Today, typical BMW engine codes ...
