Beyoncé In Legal Battle Over Blue Ivy & Says She's A Cultural Icon!

People say that we throw around the word ‘icon’ too loosely. I mean, what even is iconic anymore? The Office? Iconic. Kombucha girl? Iconic. Blue Ivy Carter? Well, that’s what Beyonce is currently arguing in a court of law.

What’s up guys it’s Emile Ennis Jr here with Clevver News and we don’t often see Beyonce pressed. I mean, even after that infamous elevator incident she remained calm, cool, and collected.

But a certain wedding planner has got Queen Bey up in arms about the usage of her daughter’s name to promote this wedding planning business.

Beyonce has tried to trademark the term “Blue Ivy Carter” since 2012 – the year that Blue was born.

They were already denied the trademark request shortly after it was placed in 2012, but in 2017 they decided to try again.

But Wendy Morales, a professional event planner based in Los Angeles and Boston, opposed the 2017 filing of the trademark because her business “Blue Ivy Party Planning” has been around long before Blue was born.

She started her business three whole years before, actually, in 2009.

Wendy is arguing that Beyonce should not be able to trademark the term “Blue Ivy” because the trademark will hurt her business. She thinks that people will confuse her boutique website and her advertisements for THE Blue Ivy.

Beyonce is specifying that the trademark is for “Blue Ivy Carter”, not just “Blue Ivy”, and “that consumers are likely to be confused between a boutique wedding event planning business and Blue Ivy Carter, the daughter of two of the most famous performers in the world, is frivolous and should be refused in its entirety.”

She’s also arguing that the presence of the word “Carter” ties the trademark to her and Jay-Z’s daughter specifically.

Beyonce also pointed out that the wedding planner business is benefitting from sharing the same name as their daughter. In fact, they had a noticeable uptick in business after Blue Ivy was born. And they have gone as far as to have a sale on Blue’s birthday in the following years.

But Wendy Morales and owner of Blue Ivy Events Veronica Morales aren’t backing down. In fact, both of them are also accusing Beyonce of fraud, saying that the trademark on Blue Ivy’s name is not for business purposes.

And let me tell you, if there is one person you don’t want to fight in court – it’s Beyonce.

She said that the trademark for her 7 year old daughter’s name IS, in fact, for business purposes.

Official documents state that Beyonce argued that Blue Ivy “has achieved a significant amount of fame, particularly at such a young age. She also has a noted and well-chronicled interest in fashion. Given these factors, Blue Ivy Carter is capable of and interested in becoming the face of a brand. For this reason, the factual context demonstrates that BGK” – that is, Beyonce Giselle Knowles, in case you didn’t get that – “filed the application with the intent to build a brand around Blue Ivy Carter and her public reputation and renown.”

that is, Beyonce Giselle Knowles, in case you didn’t get that

So I guess it’s never too early to start building a brand for yourself. Especially if that brand is already worth over a billion dollars like Blue Ivy is.

And you know of course I’m talking about the 7 year old here. Sure, I bet Blue Ivy Events has some money in the bank too, but definitely not Beyonce and Jay-Z money.

In fact, apparently the Morales’s tried to sell their business to Beyonce for 10 million dollars sometime a few years back. Obviously Beyonce declined because she was never in the wedding planning business to begin with.

But I want to hear from you guys. What do you think about the argument? Should Beyonce be able to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter”? Or do you think this business had claim to it first? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
