Donaldson to be next DUP leader - the party's third in two months

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson is the next leader of the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland – the party’s third in the space of just two months.

For a change, there were no surprises this time round – the Lagan Valley MP was the only candidate in the race when nominations closed. However many are expecting the collapse of the Stormont institutions as Sir Jeffrey is unlikely to commit to sharing power with Sinn Fein without some movement on the NI Protocol.

Proposted Irish language and other cultural legislation by Sinn Fein is expected to be a difficult square to circle for the new leader and his party.
