More swathes of the South, East and southeast of England are to go into Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the move was needed to stem the spread of coronavirus and the new variant of the infection.
London and many parts of the South East are already in Tier 4, which means they cannot leave the area or mix indoors with other households.
And Mr Hancock said two cases of a new, ‘more transmissible’ COVID-19 variant linked to South Africa have also been identified in the UK.
