Charli XCX just learned the hard way to not anger the Swiftie fandom after coming across ungrateful for opening Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour and dragging her fans.
What’s up guys, it’s Emile Ennis Jr. back here on Clevver News, and you know that saying, “Put your money where your mouth is?” Well Charli XCX just put her mouth straight where her money came from, and she’s not lookin’ too hot right now.
Look, I love Charli. She gave us hits like “Boom, Clap”, music videos like “Boys”, and I still jam to them from time to time because they are bops.
Anyway, Pitchfork clearly agrees with all of the above considering they just declared Charli the Pop Star of the Future with a cover story to go along with her all-new title.
Unfortunately, Charli’s words unintentionally threw some mad shade at Taylor Swift and Swifties after she had just opened a portion of her Reputation World Tour for her. She began to express why she left massive stadiums for smaller shows, when she revealed that opening the Reputation tour was “not her scene” to put it nicely.
She began by saying QUOTE, “I’m really grateful that Taylor asked me on that tour. But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to 5-year-olds.”
Although she went on to add that she doesn’t plan to open for anyone else in the future, making her statement more generalized, she also admitted that she’s ready to find her own voice.
She said quote, “I’ve done so much of it, and it really cemented my status as this underdog character, which I like now. But I need to just own my own fucking shit finally.”
It didn’t take long for Charli to begin trending on Twitter, and cue the reactions. One fan wrote, “charli at taylor’s house next year asking taylor to let her open her tour again because she can’t afford rent and has to sleep at her mom’s basement” accompanied by this video:
Another wrote, “well if 5 year olds are out here buying 1.29 million copies of reputation maybe 5 year olds are where it’s at, charli.”
Some fans, however, came to Charli’s defense by shedding light on her probable perspective. One fan wrote, “this is completely out of context, what she meant was she felt unwanted and uncomfortable on stage performing for the audience as they weren’t her demographic and she felt like no one cared about her performance.”
The interview garnered so much negative response, that Charli got word of the situation and attempted to clarify her words.
She took to Twitter to post a note from her phone that read, “In the printed version of this much wider conversation my answers about this tour were boiled down into one kind of weird sentence — leading up to that tour I’d been playing a tonne of 18+ club shows and so to be on stage in front of all ages was new to me and made me approach my performances with a whole new kind of energy.”
She finishes her statement by adding, “I am extremely grateful to Taylor for inviting me to open for her. She’s one of the biggest artists of my generation and the Reputation tour was one of the biggest tours in history.”
Well when you put it that way…. Thankfully no shade was intended, and we can continue on our daily practice of stanning our pop queens in peace. I know, it’s a lot to take in, but I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this whole situation that probably didn’t need to be a situation, but here we are, so get to talking down here in the comments.
