Child protection services under pressure after lockdown

Social workers have told Sky News that one of the effects of lockdown has been to pile pressure on the need for care.

One 16-year-old girl, ‘Layla’, tells social services she wants to be taken into care because of her mother’s drug use rediscovered in lockdown with her new partner.

She told Sky News: “I tried so hard to get her through it and make sure she [her mother] was okay. My worry was that if I left her she would go to drugs harder. And in the end, I just thought ‘I can’t do it no more’.”

Sky’s People and Politics Correspondent Nick Martin has been looking at how one county council is trying to cope with the problem.

And if you are affected by any of the issues raised, you can contact The Samaritans 24 hours a day on 116 123.
