Colombia’s Deadly Fight for Justice

This past week, violent protests erupting across Colombia have drawn international criticism after police fired on protestors in Cali and other cities, resulting in the death of at least 19 people. These protests follow on the heels of a year of some of the largest and most violent public demonstrations Colombia has seen in decades- starting in 2019 and resulting in the death of a teenaged protestor named Dilan Cruz, and escalating through 2020. The demonstrations mark the fallout of a decades-long armed conflict, a peace process that appears to be coming apart at the seams, an impending economic crisis, and a government with far-right conservative leanings that has failed to appease growing frustration .

In this episode of “Why We Protest,” aired originally in January 2021, VICE embedded with young protestors in Bogota during the weeks following similar deadly clashes erupted across Colombia in September 2020, which resulted in the death of 14 protestors.
