COVID-19: Chancellor says there will be no return to austerity

Chancellor Rishi Sunak says there will be no return to austerity in his spending review on Wednesday.

Mr Sunak did not deny reports that he could impose a pay cap on millions of public sector workers, but said decisions had to be taken “in the context of the wider economic climate”.

Borrowing in October hit £22.3bn due to the cost of the pandemic, with public sector debt over £2 trillion.
