COVID-19: How refugees ‘saved’ the NHS during the pandemic

International doctors were an integral part of the fight against COVID-19 at the height of the pandemic.

The Royal London Hospital recruited 50 international doctors – most of them refugees – to work in its intensive care department as the second wave peaked during the winter.

They were part of an NHS England scheme that’s helping foreign medical graduates register to work as doctors here.
