The Health Secretary has said we must learn to “live alongside COVID” in 2022 and further restrictions must only be imposed on the public as a “last resort”.
Infections soared over the festive period, hitting 162,572 in England on Saturday.
Government figures also show there were 12,395 people in hospital with COVID in England on New Year’s Eve – the highest number since 25 February last year, when there were 12,449 hospitalisations.
