COVID-19: Redundancies reach record high leading up to September

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows there has been a record 314,000 redundancies, which were reported leading up to September as the coronavirus took a further toll on jobs.

The rate of unemployment in the three months to September has risen to 4.8% which is up by 0.7% on the previous quarter.

ONS suggested that even as the wider economy was bouncing back from the pandemic-driven recession at the start of the year, the jobs crisis worsened.

The crisis is expected to deepen further over the coming months.
