A shivering 72-year-old elephant was rescued after being found collapsed on the ground due to the cold weather in Thailand.

Plybanyen, the female elderly jumbo, lives inside the Mae Sa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai province.

She lives among other ancient elephants, some as old as 80-years-old, where they are taken care of by mahouts.

However, on December 15, their caretakers found the jumbo freezing while lying on its side and unable to stand up. Temperatures had fallen below 20C and in some higher places, were nearing single digits.

The jumbos are often given a fireplace and blankets to sleep in the winter season, but Plybanyen did not use hers.

Instead, the jumbo was heard crying in the night and found collpased in the ground in the morning. Veterinarians and mahouts had come to help Plybanyen stand again by giving medication and assistance.

However, they had been having difficulties since its tusks were stolen by poachers which caused inflammation during the cold season.

After giving it some medicine and food, the elephant was able to walk again after a few hours and she was helped to warm up.

Anchalee Galmapijit, the camp’s manager, said although Plybanyen survived, there were two different elephants who died due to the cold weather, but Plybanyen’s case is heartbreaking.

She said: “Plybanyen is an elephant that has been here for more than 30 years. It is not just the cold that bothers her.

“She used to have beautiful tusks after they were stolen by poachers, she has been crying from the pain ever since.”

An estimated 2,000 elephants are living in the wild in Thailand and a similar number in captivity. In the wild, they roam through the deep jungle and in the country’s protected national parks.
