'Extraordinarily rapid rise' in COVID-19 cases 'driven by new variant'

Dr Jenny Harries, deputy chief medical officer for England, highlights an “extraordinarily rapid rise” in COVID-19 cases in the UK, driven by a new variant of the virus.

Two graphs illustrate that the previous tier system was ‘proving effective’ in supressing the original coronavirus variant, which first hit the UK in March – but that the new, more infectious, variant requires stricter measures.
