Hi Sisters, just here to report on yet another James Charles, sister scandal.
The Met Gala has come and gone, but James is still making headlines. And unfortunately, it’s not for his crazy glam look.
What’s up guys? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and we have to talk about a comment James Charles made that’s receiving some major backlash.
As we all know the Met Gala is the most exclusive event in the fashion and entertainment industries, and this year, James was one of very few influencers to score an invite.
But it’s not his invite that’s had thousands of people unsubscribing from his YouTube channel.
It’s his Instagram caption. James wrote, “Being invited to such an important event like the ball is such an honor and a step forward in the right direction for influencer representation in the media and I am so excited to be a catalyst.”
OK, people are definitely not here for the whole “influencer representation” thing.
James is being accused of comparing privileged influencers to actual marginalized groups who fight for representation literally every day, everywhere they go.
With over 16 million subscribers on his own channel, I don’t think James is fighting too hard for representation in his field.
It looks like this may have just been a very, very unfortunate choice of words to describe his first Met Gala experience, but Twitter is up in arms over James’s caption.
One person tweeted, “ah, yes. the historically oppressed and marginalized class, “influencers.”
While another said, “Sorry sister but I don’t think “influencer representation” is the best focus of your bloody huge platform when there’s some actual REAL SERIOUS ISSUES IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW and you’re in the privileged position to be a “catalyst” in fixing those. Thanks.”
James did appear to respond to the backlash on his Instagram stories. He said, “I wanted to say thank you for those who left positive comments on today’s Met Gala video, the reaction is definitely quite split. I knew this was going to happen though… Anytime anything like this ever happens, with an influencer doing something new, people tend to be very up in arms about it, but I can see why.”
And we can all agree that going to the Met Gala was a huge deal for James and it’s ok to be excited, but he just may need to be a little more careful with his words next time.
