Fire survivors tell of escape from deadly Johannesburg blaze

Survivors of the blaze which killed more than 70 people in Johannesburg on Thursday (August 31) described how they escaped the smoke filled apartment block.

One man from Malawi, Omar Arafat, said he had lost his sister in the fire and told how his small niece was thrown from the building and caught by people outside. It is not clear if the child survived.

Another man said the fire escape was closed and many died from the effects of smoke filling the building, which was occupied by homeless people, many thought to be migrants.

The blaze killed at least 73 people and injured 43, the municipal government said, in one of South Africa’s worst such tragedies in living memory.
