As if it wasn’t bad enough that the dog had found itself trapped deep in a narrow cave, rescuers in Tennessee soon learned the poor pooch was sharing the space with a 200-pound slumbering beast.

The gigantic bear sleeping in the dark recesses of the cave was not the animal that firefighters had anticipated encountering when they descended to bring back a hunting dog who had fallen down the shaft. But fortunately for them and the canine named Charlie, the dangerous predator didn’t impede them from making a harrowing rescue.

“Charlie was quickly reunited with his happy owner,” according to a Facebook post from the Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department, one of four agencies to assist with Wednesday’s rescue in the eastern Tennessee city of Sevierville.

“He was dehydrated and hungry, but in otherwise good condition.”
