Former client charged with shooting Alex Murdaugh in insurance scam | New York Post

The man allegedly hired by disgraced South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh in a bizarre scheme to leave his son with $10 million in insurance cash is a suspected drug dealer.

Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was charged Tuesday after confessing to the arranged shooting of Murdaugh, 53, whose wife was gunned down in June alongside another son, 22-year-old Paul.

Smith was a former client of Murdaugh, a once-powerful lawyer who represented him in a speeding case in 2013 as well as a personal injury lawsuit the previous year, according to the Post and Courier.

Along with a slew of charges including assisted suicide and insurance fraud, Smith on Tuesday was also charged with distribution of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.
