Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has held meetings with energy bosses today to address rapidly rising gas and electricity prices.
Mr Kwarteng met with the bosses of major energy suppliers who, it is thought, asked the government for tax cuts and the relaxation of green levies.
The government has maintained that it wants to ensure that consumers are protected – but it is feared that soaring costs are pushing more people into fuel poverty.
