From New York to New Mexico, barriers were broken across America in historic election wins. Sarah McBride won her race for Delaware State Senate, making her the first openly transgender state senator. Cynthia Lummis will be the first woman to serve in the senate from Wyoming. Missouri’s Cori Bush will be the first Black woman elected to represent the state in Congress. New Mexico election results make it the first state to elect an all women-of-color delegation after Deb Haaland, Yvette Herrell and Teresa Leger won their respective seats for Congress. New York elected Ritchie Torres in the Bronx and Mondaire Jones in Rockland County. They both are the first openly gay black men to be elected to Congress. The 2020 election marks the largest and most diverse caucus of LGBTQ members of congress in its history.
