Hyundai Veloster “Grappler” Concept Takes Quirky Hatchback Off-Roading

Hyundai Veloster “Grappler” Concept Takes Quirky Hatchback Off-Roading

Hyundai is taking its asymmetrical Veloster hatchback off the beaten path with the “Grappler” Concept. Equipped with body cladding, a raised ride height and a different front bumper with improved approach and departure angles, the Veloster “Grappler” Concept looks ready for all kinds of dirt adventures.

To add to its off-road performance theme, the Hyundai Veloster “Grappler” Concept gets oversized all-terrain tires, rally-themed Method Racing alloy wheels, and a Borla exhaust. Further adding to the car’s rugged looks are a Thule roof basket with integrated utility lights, Baja Designs lighting, a rack-mounted solar panel, a Napier outdoor tent mounted on the roof, and a Seibon carbon-fiber hood.

Moving inside, the Veloster “Grappler” Concept gets Recaro front seats with a houndstooth pattern, a Goal Zero portable power station, roadside assistance and first aid kits, Scosche mounts, and Goal Zero-branded lights. Hyundai also added a number of accessories including sport pedals, a sport shifter, all-weather floor mats, and interior ambient lighting.

Hyundai did not disclose which model the Veloster “Grappler” Concept is based on but we’re willing to bet it’s the Veloster Turbo. That model comes with a 1.6-liter turbo I-4 with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic on the base and Ultimate grades or a six-speed manual in the R-Spec. The second generation Veloster hatchback has gained plenty of praise for its engaging driving dynamics courtesy of a thoroughly revised suspension that ditched the torsion beam in the rear in favor of a multilink layout. Its also the first Hyundai vehicle in North America to gain a high-performance model wearing the N badge.
