IRS to send out 4M stimulus payments via prepaid debit cards | New York Post

The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service said they will begin to send millions of economic stimulus payments to Americans this week by way of prepaid debit cards instead of checks.

The cards, issued through the IRS’ financial agent MetaBank, will allow recipients to withdraw funds at in-network ATMs, make purchases and transfer funds to their bank accounts without incurring any fees, the Treasury Department announced on Monday.

“Treasury and the IRS have been working with unprecedented speed to issue Economic Impact Payments to American families. Prepaid debit cards are secure, easy to use, and allow us to deliver Americans their money quickly,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “Recipients can immediately activate and use the cards safely.”
