Nearly six months after the James Charles and Tati Westbrook YouTube drama, James just admitted that he still doesn’t feel like himself and talked about the horrifying implications of Tati’s statements.
What’s up? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and James Charles has been pretty open about how the scandal severely impacted his mental health.
He’s talked about how it really made him check himself and value what’s important in life.
And he just opened up to Paper Magazine in a candid interview about where he’s at now six months later.
He said quote, “I’m not mentally in a place where I want to be. What’s even harder to swallow is that it’s been six months since all the drama happened. I thought by this time I’d be completely good — back to normal, if you will — and that’s not the case.”
And he also said that his take away from the entire experience was that you never really know who your true friends are and that he learned to be grateful for the little things in life because it could all go away.
And in case you need a little recap on what happened, Tati not only accused James of betraying her Halo Beauty brand by promoting its competitor Sugar Bear Hear…
But she accused him of coercing straight men into being gay which led to a LOT of online hate directed at James.
At the time, James went from being one of the most powerful beauty influencers in the world to someone whose subscriber count was on watch as more than 3 million people unsubscribed from him channel.
Which by the way, was the fastest drop in history.
James talked about how dangerous this narrative is not only for him, who knew what she said wasn’t true, but for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
He went on and explained how scary it was that that topic is what became the narrative of the entire feud.
James said quote, “The reality is that the ‘hook-up’ that was being discussed was completely consensual. It was with a boy who told me that he was bisexual and later on told the world he was bisexual. Therefore there’s nothing wrong with that.”
He also talked about the fallout of people who came out saying James was talking to them and/or sliding into their DMs.
He explained that quote, “It really sucked, it was really frustrating because dating is a normal experience that a lot of people go through and it’s something that I have not gotten the chance to go through because there were not a lot of other out gay kids in my high school.”
He then went on to explain that dating now is even harder because with his job people only want to date him for financial gain, or followers, or attention.
James also got into cyberbullying and cancel culture.
He said quote, “There’s no other word to describe it other than just toxic. It’s so toxic. It’s behavior that should not be tolerated. And it’s so easy to forget that when you’re tweeting these people, there’s a real person behind the other screen that’s looking at that. … It could truly push someone over the edge.”
He also explained how the most horrifying part of it all to him is that people have fun with it. Like cancelling someone just becomes amusement for someone else, but it can really get to someone and hurt them.
He said quote, “I can say firsthand, they got to me. I was so grateful to be surrounded by close friends and family that were checking on me all day long, every single day, in the middle of the night, every 10 minutes to make sure I didn’t do something that I could never take back.”
And fans are totally standing with James on this entire interview.
One person wrote quote, “It’s not FUN to hurt anyone no matter the situation”
Another said quote, “Watching this interview, I felt myself wanting to just reach thru the screen and hug him as specially in the ending where he was gonna cry but stopped himself…. after this seeing the hate hurts x2 as much. This interview had so much truth and all and I just wish things get better for him next year and I pray his mental health gets back to the way it was”
But I want to know what you guys think about James’s new interview.
Do you feel differently about the situation after hearing him talk about it 6 months later? Also, do you agree with James about how toxic cancel culture?
