Japan releases treated Fukushima radioactive water into Pacific Ocean

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) released a video of its operation to discharge treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday (August 24).

The video shows TEPCO workers seated at the plant’s control room turning a key to begin the water release.

Treated water running down a drain, before its release into the ocean, can also be seen.

The Japanese government signed off on the plan two years ago and it was given a green light by the U.N. nuclear watchdog last month. The discharge is a key step in decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi plant after it was destroyed by a tsunami in 2011.

Plant operator TEPCO said the release began at 1:03 p.m. local time (0403 GMT) and it had not identified any abnormalities.
