Rep. Jim Jordan kicked off a third day of voting in the House with a history lesson, highlighting the herculean task before House Republicans to “step up” and elect him speaker by the end of the day.
“I represent Wapakoneta, Ohio, Auglaize County, Ohio, hometown of Neil Armstrong, who 22 years after Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier, steps on the moon,” Jordan said in a Capitol Hill press conference around 8 a.m.
The Ohio Republican leaned on anecdotes from a visit to the Wright Brothers National Museum in his home state as well as his “favorite scripture verse” in brief remarks calling his caucus to action.
“Stop and think about it,” Jordan told reporters. “In 66 years, one lifetime, we went from two guys flying a hundred feet to putting a man on the moon.”
“It is a great country — a great country — the greatest country, mind you, made up of great people,” he said. “And right now those people are starting to doubt and wonder about their government and where our nation is headed.”
His address was aimed at the more than 20 members who have opposed his speakership bid thus far, appealing to them and others to vote for him on a third ballot and satisfy their constituents.
“I think they are hungry for leadership,” Jordan said. “And frankly, the White House can’t provide it. They know the Senate won’t lead. And they are looking for House Republicans to step up and lead and make changes on these important issues.”
He listed the need to pass upcoming government spending legislation, funding the US military and support for Israel amid its ongoing war with Hamas, among other concerns.
“Americans expect their government to fight for them; they expect us to finish our work; and they expect us to keep faith with the principles and values that have made us the greatest nation ever,” Jordan concluded.
“The quickest way to get all this work done is to get a speaker elected — that’s what I hope we can do today.”
