As Jimmy Carter celebrates his 99th birthday this weekend, he sets the bar just a bit higher as the longest living president.

Carter, the 39th president, has outlived George H.W. Bush by more than four years – something that seemed unlikely in 2015, when Carter announced that cancer had spread to his brain. He has been in home Hospice care since February.

In recent days, Jason Carter, the Carter’s grandson and chairman of the Carter Center’s Board of Trustees, told USA TODAY that both Jimmy and Rosalynn, his wife of 77 years, have been in declining health. But the couple surprised attendees at the Plains (Georgia) Peanut Festival last weekend by visiting the event in a car.

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum decided on Tuesday to move Carter’s birthday celebration from his actual birthday on Oct. 1 to today because of the impending government shutdown.
