It looks like John Mayer was laughing about Taylor Swift’s “Lover” lyrics while he was with Shawn Mendes, and obviously some Swifties were NOT having it.
What’s up? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and over the weekend, John Mayer, who happens to be Taylor Swift’s ex, hosted his Instagram Live talk show and with his special guest, Shawn Mendes.
They talked about Shawn’s verse in the new remix of “Lover” and John did say that he loves the song, but that’s not what caught fans attention.
At one point during the livestream, John said he gets “a little chuckle” out of the song because of some of the lyrics.
It’s not a secret that a lot of people who decorate their house with Christmas lights leave them up until January. The lyrics are just stating the obvious, which John seems to find pretty funny.
Shawn laughs at John before getting back to talking about his verse on the track and saying ”But you like the song?”. And Shawn responds “I love the song”.
But later on, John brought it back to this whole Christmas lights thing and sang, “We can keep the Christmas lights up till January. And then about January 5th, we’ll take the lights down. And then we’ll put ’em in a box and we’ll label that box Christmas Lights. Yeah, we’ll put ’em in the attic until next December.”
And while some people might be able to see the humor in this lyric, John may have taken it a liiiittle too far given this is a song by his ex about her new boyfriend.
Obviously some Swifties are up in arms over this, but others thought it was just all in good fun.
One person wrote quote, “i’m not trying to justify him or anything but i genuinely think he liked the song?? and he was just saying he found those lyrics funny. he was actually very nice and polite????”
And another said quote, “Pretty sure the entire fandom made the joke about leaving the Christmas lights up until January but now 2 men do it, even though they both said they loved the song multiple times, and it’s an issue. Y’all need to relax”
But the Swifties are divided because some are coming after John for making fun of Taylor’s lyrics.
One person wrote quote, “Siri play Dear John.”
And another said quote, “they are trying so hard to be funny I have to laugh”
But fans weren’t just upset with John, they were also pretty upset with the way Shawn handled the situation.
One person said quote, “Is this Shawn showing his true colors or something because yikes”
Another said quote, “i’m rly disappointed in shawn wtf”
And another fan wrote quote, “Did he only become friends with Taylor to get to Camila”
Yikes, I mean, Shawn was a guest on John’s show and I can imagine it would’ve been a bit awkward to call him out. And to be honest, I feel like I can see Shawn looking uncomfortable when John started making his jokes. And perhaps that’s why Shawn tried to take control by bringing it back to talking about the song.
John said on multiple occasions that he actually really loved Taylor’s song and seemed to just be making a joke, but I guess we’ll never know for sure what his intentions were unless he tells us himself.
Both Shawn and John haven’t commented on this fiasco and neither has Taylor.
But something tells me that’s because Taylor has way bigger things to deal with right now.
As you all know, Taylor has been stuck in some pretty complicated drama between music manager Scooter Braun and former Big Machine Records owner, Scott Borchetta.
In case you forgot, when Scooter purchased the label for 300 million dollars, it included the rights to Taylor’s entire music catalog recorded there AKA her first 6 albums.
And as we all know, Taylor was NOT happy about this.
She plans to re-record her masters, but she legally can’t do that until November of 2020.
