Kanye West is opening up about his insanely scary struggle with bipolar disorder and what happens when he has an “episode.”
What’s up guys? It’s Emile Ennis Jr. here with Clevver News and Kanye got candid about his mental illness with David Letterman on his Netflix show.
Kanye’s particular episode of “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman” comes out on May 31st but we got a tease of Kanye’s interview in the new trailer.
And in case you don’t remember, Kanye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years ago after being placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold in November 2016.
Since then he has been talked about the stigma associated with mental illness.
Though his Twitter can sometimes be, well you know, very Kanye…
He’s also always spreading love, positivity, and has tweeted about destigmatizing mental illness.
His Ye album cover even says “I hate being bi-polar it’s awesome” and he revealed to Jimmy Kimmel what he meant by that.
According to the Daily Mail, in this new interview Kayne compared his bipolar disorder to quote “a sprained brain,” and explained that it has a strong stigma attached to it.
He said quote, “People are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way. If someone has a sprained ankle, you’re not going to push on him more. With us, once our brain gets to a point of spraining, people do everything to make it worse.”
Kanye then recalled his stay in a psychiatric hospital and said his treatment was awful.
He said quote, “They have this moment where they put you — they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed and they separate you from everyone you know. When you are in that state, you have to have someone you trust. It is cruel and primitive to do that. They love to write you off. They love to cut your sentences off halfway. What you say doesn’t mean as much.”
Luckily, now he is in a better place according to his wife Kim Kardashian.
She told Vogue that quote, “I think we’re in a pretty good place with it now. It is an emotional process, for sure. Right now everything is really calm. But we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.”
However, Kim did note that he won’t take medication to treat his disorder because he thinks it stifles his creativity.
She said quote, “For him, being on medication is not really an option, because it just changes who he is. Traveling a lot does set it off, so he doesn’t travel as much as he used to. And when he’s in the middle of a bipolar episode, I’ll do everything to be supportive and help to calm the situation.”
Looks like Kanye has all of the love and support he needs from his family.
And we are really excited to hear what else he has to say on May 31st.
If we know anything about Kanye, we know it’ll probably make some waves.
