Lorde Faces Possible Jail Time & Twitter Makes #FreeLorde Trend!

Hashtags are typically hit or miss. It seems like there’s tons that are hard to decipher, tons that don’t make sense, and tons that are just plain bad. But sometimes you find a diamond in the rough. Sometimes the internet grants us something clever AND funny that sucks you down a black hole of refreshing twitter for hours on end. And that’s the case with Hashtag “Free Lorde” that started trending earlier today.

What’s up guys it’s Emile Ennis Jr. here with Clevver News. Don’t worry, Lorde isn’t locked in Beyonce’s basement along with Sia. But there are rumors going around that she is going to be tossed in a New Zealand jail over a $3000 fine.

New Zealand’s National Party is reportedly considering creating a policy where parents will be fined if their child leaves school before finishing their studies. Basically that means they need to complete high school.

So what does Lorde have to do with all of this? Well, she stopped going to school after her “Pure Heroine” tour in 2013.

She finished her twelfth year at Takapuna Grammar School in 2013 and never went back to finish year 13.

She recorded “Royals” when she was just 15 years old, and the next year the song took the whole world by storm.

When Lorde left school to tour when she was 16 years old, which is the legal age in New Zealand for a student to leave their studies. That’s just like the law in most states of the US that says students must be 16 years old to drop out of school without parental consent.

But you know, Lorde sure does have a lot of songs about high school parties for someone who never completed their last year.

And in more evidence that Lorde is, in fact, a witch – she kind of predicted this whole thing in one of her first songs “Swinging Party”.

She says in the lyrics “quitting work and going to work and never going fishing….if being wrongs a crime, I’m serving forever”.

Okay so I don’t know who needs to hear this but Lorde is not actually going to go to jail.

The 3,000 dollar fine is nothing more than an idea from a political party yet. Nothing has even been formally proposed. But people have taken that idea and run with it all the way to Twitter.

One thing led to another and now Hashtag “Free Lorde” is trending. The hashtag is filled with fans joking that Lorde will be spending time behind bars because she’s refusing to pay the $3000 fine.

Someone even made a go fund me trying to raise the $3000 fee Lorde’s family would have to pay should this law go into effect. But you know, maybe if Lorde served some time behind bars she would find some time to WRITE some bars

So hopefully Lorde doesn’t go to jail in the meantime. Because I don’t think there’s room for her piano in a jail cell.

But when Lorde says “me and my friends”, I don’t believe that there’s going to be anything simple about it.

Her last album was produced by Jack Antinoff, who has also produced albums for Taylor Swift, Pink, Lana Del Rey, Sia, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

And last time Lorde and Jack worked together, rumors flew that it resulted in a love affair that all started one fateful day at Coachella – as all love affairs tend to do.

Which is what “Sober II” is supposedly written about.

That love affair caused Jack and his girlfriend at the time, Lena Dunham, to break up.

People believed that Jack cheated on her with Lorde while they worked together in Lena’s own house. Lena seemed to confirm the news when she liked a comment made online about the scandal. Though nothing has ever been proven.

So until her next album, let the memes continue.
Or this one who compared her getting her hair braided in jail to Jeffree Star

Guys, don’t believe all the hashtags you see on the internet. Unless that hashtag is # Free Britney, which is very very real!

But I want to hear what you guys have to say. What’s your favorite Lorde meme you’ve seen? Do you think spending some time in jail will be great for the music? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.

And then make sure you subscribe to Clevver News so you can stay up to date on the legal battle that Lorde will certainly be facing. Or, you know, whatever else we’ve got to talk about.
