Nagorno-Karabakh: The war’s impact for civilians as agreement nears new phase

People have been forced to flee the disputed area in Azerbaijan, as districts are set to be taken over and an estimated 2,500 civilians have abandoned nearby villages.

The capture of Shusha was the tipping point for Azerbaijan – the moment when Armenia realised the main city of Stepanakert would be next and their chance of victory had gone.

Next month, a city set that was about to be handed over was already deserted, with defiant messages scrawled on the petrol station’s wall.
