NATO Chief: Ukraine Situation, Troop Movement, Defense Expenditure

NATO’s secretary general outlined a three-point plan to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia which he hoped would be agreed to by members of the bloc during a summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius next week.

Jens Stoltenberg told journalists in Brussels on Friday that the proposal includes setting up a “multi-year program of assistance to ensure full interoperability between the Ukrainian armed forces and NATO.”

He also said that a “NATO-Ukraine Council” would be setup to “upgrade” the bloc’s “political ties’ with the conflict-ridden country.

The third point of the plan will focus on member states reaffirming Ukraine’s future membership in NATO, Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg also told Friday’s news conference that “further major steps” would be taken to “strengthen” NATO.

They included “three new regional defence plans” and “putting 300,000 troops on fire readiness.”

The two-day summit starting on Tuesday with US President Joe Biden and other NATO leaders will be the most high-profile international event that Lithuania has hosted since it joined the alliance in 2004.
