Boris Johnson has announced that a new antivirals taskforce will aim to make “promising new medicines” available as early as this autumn.
The prime minister suggested some examples of what this could include, such as a tablet you can take at home if you test positive that could reduce your chances of becoming severely ill.
He added that it could include a pill that could stop you contracting the virus if you live with someone who has tested positive.
The prime minister did not say whether such medicines are already being trialled.
