New Zealand's Migrant Workers Are Trapped in a Luxury Resort During Coronavirus

A severe economic downturn triggered by the coronavirus pandemic has left thousands of migrant workers jobless in New Zealand. The luxury resort of Queentown in the country’s South Island is worst affected, with as many as 6,500 people in need of emergency assistance.

Colombian Juliana Castaneda was laid off from a backpackers hostel in Queenstown as tourist numbers plummeted. There are currently no direct flights to her homeland, and she couldn’t afford a ticket anyway. “I feel really stuck here,” she told VICE News.
