House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., to serve as the next speaker of the House, breaking weeks of GOP infighting that left the lower chamber frozen.
After four nomination votes, GOP lawmakers rallied behind Johnson, who was the No. 5 ranking House Republican as the conference's vice chair. Flanked by an exuberant conference cheering his name on Tuesday, Johnson vowed he was "very confident" he could shore up the support needed to be elected speaker on the House floor.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives chose Tom Emmer as their nominee for speaker on Tuesday (October 24) but ran into the same internal divisions that have paralyzed the leaderless chamber for three weeks. "We are again, back to where we started," Representative Troy Nehls told reporters during a break from a closed-door conference meeting.
Emmer, who serves as the No. 3 Republican in the House, secured the nomination after five rounds of voting but appeared to be at least 20 votes short of the 217 he would need to win the speaker's gavel, lawmakers said.
The party's fourth pick for the job now finds himself in the same precarious spot that doomed the previous three candidates: seeking to win over a small group of holdouts from his own party that...

Another emergency migrant shelter was shuttered Monday amid fire safety concerns — the latest in a string of Big Apple sites deemed potential fire traps. NY Post Reporter Kevin Sheehan shares this story.
Dozens of asylum seekers, many of them loaded down with luggage, were kicked out of the former Touro University campus near Penn Station in Manhattan as city fire officials slapped a vacate order on the window and told the migrants they had to clear out.
FDNY officials said 110 people in migrant families were loaded onto city vans and shipped out — leaving about 40 single men stranded on the sidewalk with MetroCards and maps to other shelters in the five boroughs.

Donald Trump "arbitrarily" inflated the value of his real estate assets in order to secure favorable insurance premiums, Trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen testified at the former president's civil fraud trial on Tuesday (October 24).
Trump has denied wrongdoing and defended the valuations of his properties, saying the case is a "fraud" and a political witch hunt.
He has occasionally appeared in court over the past month, complaining in inflammatory remarks to reporters that it is a distraction from his campaign.
He arrived on Monday following a campaign stop in New Hampshire and just days after being fined $5,000 by Justice Arthur Engoron, the judge overseeing the case, for violating a gag order.

There have been at least six publicly acknowledged attacks on US military sites in the Middle East over the past week, fueled by the Israeli response to Hamas’ surprise terror attack on Oct. 7.
“Let me say what we’ve consistently said to Iranian officials through other channels: The United States does not seek conflict with Iran, we do not want this war to widen,” Blinken said at Turtle Bay. “But if Iran or its proxies attack US personnel anywhere, make no mistake – we will defend our people, we ...

Hurricane Otis slammed into Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane early Wednesday, bringing dangerous winds and heavy rain to Acapulco and surrounding towns, stirring memories of a 1997 storm that killed dozens of people.
Now a Category 4 storm, the hurricane was expected to continue to weaken quickly in Guerrero state’s steep mountains.
But the 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters) of rain forecast, with as much as 15 inches (38 centimeters) possible in some areas, raised the threat of landslides and floods.
Otis was about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north-northwest of Acapulco with its maximum sustained winds decreasing to 130 mph (215 kph) and moving at 10 mph (17 kph).
The center of Otis is expected to move farther inland o...

Fraser Bohm, 22, was taken into custody Tuesday and is facing four counts of murder in the deaths of Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir and Deslyn Williams.
The four young women were killed Oct. 17 when Bohm lost control of his BMW while speeding on a notoriously dangerous stretch of the iconic Pacific Coast Highway.
He smashed into several parked cars before colliding with the foursome, who were walking nearby, police said after the crash.
Rolston, Stewart, Weir and Williams — all seniors from the same sorority — were declared dead at the scene.
