Residential school survivors want action, not just an apology
http://youtu.be/qEgS1J1IlLA
In late March, a group of Indigenous delegates, including residential school survivors, traveled to the Vatican, where Pope Francis apologized for the deplorable conduct of some members of the Catholic Church. But reaction to the apology has been mixed.
For some, it was a comfort, but for others, more concrete action is still needed. With the Pope's visit to Canada set for late July, there are calls for a fuller apology, delivered on Canadian soil. There are also calls for action: criminal charges for those responsible, and the release of critical documents held in Rome -- that could help families identify the children who never came home.

The David and Goliath fight against online conspiracies
http://youtu.be/rm5mfxv-XSw
Online conspiracies and misinformation are driving mistrust, division and even violence – much of it is seeded on social media platforms.
And big tech companies are cashing in on the views and likes, driven by algorithms designed not to inform but to retain users. Their lobbying powers are immense.
But Imran Ahmed is undaunted. He and his Center for Countering Digital Hate are at the heart of the fight for reform and accountability.
For The New Reality, Jeff Semple takes us through the online spaces they’ve infiltrated, talks about how Putin’s war in Ukraine brought this to a boil, and the next frontier in online hate and disinformation.

Effective Altruism: A global movement of do-gooders
http://youtu.be/Uu_w2wCcaWU
How do you do the most good in the best way possible? That’s the question at the center of a global philosophical and social movement called effective altruism.
Rather than giving to charity based on emotional attachments, effective altruists use data and analysis to discern which causes they should support.
Members of the movement have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charities and pledged billions more.
But effective altruism isn’t just about donating money. Some effective altruists have donated kidneys to strangers, while others dedicate their life’s work to solving big global problems.

Living With It: Frontline doctors on the next phase of the pandemic
http://youtu.be/6DZBFJ4LgZk
We’ve heard politicians, protestors and businesses say we need to move on from COVID public health restrictions and “learn to live with it,” like the flu.
Most health professionals were on the other side of that debate – until now. For The New Reality, Jeff Semple speaks with doctors who acknowledge the toll of lockdowns and the gains made by vaccines and treatments.
He explores what accepting COVID as endemic will look like for them, and what it could mean for the next wave.
We also hear from immunocompromised patients – those who are still at highest risk of dying from the virus – about moving into this next phase of the pandemic.

LTC Crisis: Are staffing shortages putting our seniors at risk?
http://youtu.be/suRdcSJnd3A
When COVID-19 hit two years ago, the nation was appalled at how Canada’s most vulnerable and those caring for them were so exposed to – and devastated by – the virus.
Since then, more than 16,000 people in Canada’s long-term care system have died of COVID-19. For the first nine months of the pandemic, Menno Place in Abbotsford, BC, safeguarded its residents.
But when it finally hit, the wave of illness and death was devastating. Now, they are dealing with another crisis – staffing shortages.
For The New Reality, Dawna Friesen speaks with its CEO Karen Biggs about the problem plaguing LTC homes across Canada, and some solutions.
