Despite growing pressure from doctors and scientists to abandon the relaxation of Covid restrictions over Christmas , the four nations of the United Kingdom have decided to stick largely to the previously agreed plans.
However with the number of infections rising sharply all four UK nations are urging people to observe “extreme caution” over the five-day Christmas period.
The rules initially agreed for all of the UK between the 23rd and 27th December allow three households in a “Christmas bubble” to mix indoors and to stay overnight if that's unavoidable.

There's growing pressure on the four home nations of the United Kingdom to look again at the easing of Covid restrictions over the Christmas period.
Two leading medical journals have joined forces to warn that the decision to ease the rules for a 5-day period is “rash” and will “cost many lives”.
Under the Christmas rules agreed by the four nations, families will be able to travel across the UK and three households will be allowed to gather under one roof.
Labour has called for the guidelines to be clearer and tougher.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia said Wednesday that stimulus checks of between $500 and $1,200 may be included in the final COVID-19 relief package expected this week.
The idea is supported by Republican leaders in the House and Senate and President Trump, as well as by left-wing Democrats in both chambers. It also previously has been supported in principle by Democratic leaders.

Wearing a used mask could be more dangerous than not wearing one at all when it comes to warding off COVID-19, a new study has found.
A new three-layer surgical mask is 65 percent efficient in filtering particles in the air — but when used, that number drops to 25 percent, according to the study published Tuesday in the Physics of Fluids.
Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and California Baptist University say that masks slow down airflow, making people more susceptible to breathing in particles — and a dirty face mask can’t effectively filter out the tiniest of droplets.
